Sharks Finish Weekend 4-2

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern Sharks went 4-2 this weekend, as they hosted double-headers against Saginaw Valley State, Bentley University and East Stroudsburg University. The Sharks split Friday's double-header against Saginaw Valley State before sweeping Bentley on Saturday. They also split the series against East Stroudsburg, improving to 6-6 on the young season.

How it Happened (GAME 1)
  • The Sharks got on the board quickly, as they scored on Destiny Lewis' RBI single and later on Gianna Russo's sacrificial fly to go up 2-0 in the first inning.
  • Russo then hit a solo shot to center field, giving the Sharks all the momentum and a 3-0 lead in the third.
  • In the fourth inning, Lewis singled to right field, but the Cardinals mishandled the ball and made two errors, resulting in Brianna Matthews scoring an unearned run to go up 4-0.
  • The Sharks completely took over in the sixth inning, as they scored on Christina D'Agostino's RBI single, and D'Agostino later stole home as the Cardinals committed a throwing error. 
  • Matthews then scored on a wild pitch from the Cardinals, and Taylor Rogers recorded an RBI single to give NSU its final run and an 8-0 lead. The Sharks blanked the Cardinals and took the first game of the double-header.

How it Happened (GAME 2) 
  • The Cardinals got on the board first in Game 2, as Olivia Elliott was walked with the bases loaded. With the bases still loaded, Jenna Morse was then hit by a pitch, and the Cardinals went up 2-0 in the first inning.
  • Saginaw Valley State kept the momentum in the fourth inning, as Aalana Kimble batted in two runs with a single to give them a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, Mya Purdy batted in two runs with a triple to left field, resulting in the Cardinals' sixth and final run to go up 6-0.
  • The Sharks responded with their lone score of the game in the seventh inning when Destiny Lewis hit an RBI single, but that was their only score, and Saginaw Valley won 6-1.

How it Happened (GAME 3)
  • Both teams struggled to score in the first game of Saturday's double-header, as the game remained scoreless through five innings.
  • The Sharks finally struck paydirt in the sixth, as Gianna Russo doubled to left center field, allowing Destiny Lewis to score. The Sharks doubled their lead when Emily Garcia batted in Russo on a fielder's choice, pushing their lead to 2-0. That lead stood for the rest of the game, as the Falcons were unable to score in the seventh.

How it Happened (GAME 4)
  • Neither team scored through the first inning, but the Sharks got on the board in the second when Savanna Isaacson scored on a wild pitch. 
  • In the third, Abbey Moore's sacrificial fly batted in Gianna Russo, and later, Ana Richiez doubled to right center field, bringing Emily Garcia home. That run brought NSU's lead to 3-0.
  • The Sharks continued pouring it on in the fourth inning, as Moore recorded an RBI single, and Richiez recorded an RBI double, giving the Sharks a commanding 6-0 lead. That lead held for the remainder of the game, and the Sharks won the series 2-0.

How it Happened (GAME 5)
  • The Warriors struck first, as Delaney Ridgell hit a two-run homer to left field in the first inning to go up 2-0.
  • The Sharks got on the board at the bottom of the first when Brianna Matthews recorded an RBI triple, and they tied the score on Gianna Russo's sacrificial fly that brought Matthews home.
  • Neither team was able to score during the next six innings, and the score remained deadlocked 2-2.
  • Finally, Christina D'Agostino hit a walkoff solo shot at the bottom of the seventh, bringing the Shark faithful to their feet and securing the 3-2 victory.

How it Happened (GAME 6)
  • Neither team was able to score through the first inning, but the Warriors recorded three unearned runs in the second, with two of them coming off of errors. Gigi Demito's RBI single gave East Stroudsburg a 3-0 lead after two innings.
  • The Warriors added to their lead with two consecutive RBI singles in the third, giving them a 5-0 lead.
  • The Sharks finally got on the board with Gianna Russo's two-run homerun at the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as the Sharks fell 5-2.


What's Next

The Sharks will travel to Americus, GA for dates with Mars Hill University (10:00 AM) and Georgia Southwestern State (2:00 PM) on Valentine's Day. They'll then have a double-header against Georgia College the following day (10:00 AM and 12 noon).
